The Department of Primary Industries has an experimental vineyard in Nuriootpa, testing varieties for their ability to perform in the Barossa climate. Small parcels of fruit can be procured if you get in before anyone else. These two Italian varietals are new to the Barossas viticultural landscape and are well suited due to their ability to ripen fully whilst retaining naturally high acid levels.

| Wijngoed informatie | "Massena, a winemaking partnership between Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins, has been producing Barossa wine since the 2000 vintage, concentrating on the traditional values and techniques which have made the wines of this region unique. We have dedicated growers in the North Western Barossa areas of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill, providing fruit from dry farmed, low yielding vines up to 120 years of age. Whilst we work mostly with traditional Barossa varieties Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro from these growers, we are also trialling new varieties such as Durif, Barbera, Dolcetto, Roussanne, Saperavi and Tannat. Winemaking is based on non interventional philosophies, allowing the vineyard character to take pride of place. Destemming into open fermenters, regular pumping over and basket pressing has given wines of full fruit character. All wines are aged in old French Oak barrels with some new French Oak barriques utilized for the Shiraz. Each vineyard section is kept separate during vintaging and maturation in barrel, until the final blends are assembled. " |
